Alex....
Hello, My name is Kimberly Donathen. My husband, Dennis, and I have
two children with Autism. Our oldest, Alex who is eight, has been
diagnosed with Severe but Functioning Autism, Sensory Processing
Disorder and ADHD. Because of the daily symptoms of Autism, which
range from anxiety to major meltdowns, our school system was not able to
provide him the care and supervision he required. Being home schooled
makes his inability to interact with peers and form bonding friendships even
more difficult.
We have begun the costly process of obtaining an Autism Service Dog for
Alex at the recommendation of his physicians and therapist. It would be
beautiful to see a bond created between Alex and a Service Dog. It would
help to keep him safe and provide easier moments during the day and night.
Going out in public would be something we could do as a family without it
being a "have to" situation with tears and looks from strangers. Alex would
know the secure feeling of having a non judgmental friend.
We are working through the Service Dog Institute of South Carolina.
Health Insurance no longer covers any part of the cost of a Service Dog
which is $12,000.
We have hopes of finding media outlets to help raise the public awareness of
our story and need to raise money to achieve the goal of obtaining a Service
Dog for Alex.
Alex, as well as our entire family, will appreciate anything you can do to
help us reach our goal.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Donathen.
